In Rema starts the next training course "Rural Solar Energy Technician". 25 students will be trained now for six months in rural electrification with photovoltaics and also in business management.

Solar Energy Foundation gets the world’s leading green energy prize awarded £20,000 and the Ashden Award for electrification of rural areas. HRH the Prince of Wales presented the Award for setting up the biggest solar energy programme in Ethiopia.

A new solar lamp, designed from Solar Energy Foundation, is available on the market: SunTransfer 2. The lamp can be used either as torch light or as fixed installed lamp. Stiftung Solarenergie - Solar Energy Foundation concludes an agreement with the foundation Menschen für Menschen to install 1,500 Solar-Home-Systems for light in 144 Ethiopian schools. Start of this installation is september 2009.

Rema is provided with a solar water pump. In Rema the people often have to walk several hours in order to reach a water source. The path from the mountainous plateau to the valley is steep. Together with their cooperation partner “Menschen für Menschen” [People for People], the Solar Energy Foundation has installed a solar water pumping system in the village of Rema. With the aid of the power provided by the sun, the women and the children no longer have to endure this long journey on foot into the valley. The time they have saved can be put to better use: The children, for example, can now go to school during the day.

April 2008
Rema becomes part of a worldwide project with the title “One laptop per child”. The teachers in Rema are provided with detailed training in the use of a small computer. The power for the laptops in Rema comes, of course, from the sun.

12th March 2008
The project “Light for Education III” begins: The contract with the district of Rema ena Dire is signed. In the following months, in the first expansion step, approximately 1,500 huts will be provided with solar light. Up until now it is the largest solar project in East Africa. Start of the course “Rural Solar Energy Technician", which is directed at electrical engineers. This training programme, which is unique in this form in Africa, consists of three modules: solar technology, management and practical application. The aim of this training programme, which is especially orientated towards the needs of rural electrification, is to enable the participants to start up their own small solar businesses in the countryside. In Rema (approx. 150 km north of Addis Ababa) more than 1,000 huts as well as a health post, school and public administration buildings will be supplied with solar energy from October onwards. Planned date of completion: Spring 2007. More...

September 2006: Establishment of the Solar Competence Center in Addis Ababa
It is decided that in the future the branch office of the Stiftung Solarenergie together with Ethiopian assistants shall install solar systems and ensure that they are kept in good working order. In addition, the Solar Competence Center will carry out training measures on behalf of the foundation. More...

August 2006: Establishment of the foundation “Stiftung Solarenergie”
The Förderverein Stiftung Solarenergie e.V. (Association for the Promotion of Solar Energy) and Harald Schützeichel as a private benefactor establish the foundation “Stiftung Solarenergie”. The new foundation takes over the solar projects of the association.

April 2006: Project development in Rema in the region of Mida
The village of Rema decides against the gift of a diesel generator and declares itself in favour of solar energy instead. In response, the Stiftung Solarenergie develops a plan for a decentralised power supply serving a village with approx. 6,000 inhabitants.
In addition, further health posts are provided with solar cooling units in the same month.
